VOLUME XXXV, NUMBER 10, October, 2000

Jim Williams, Editor

The Businessmen's Flying Club held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 3, 2000 at the Naper Aero clubhouse. Flying members Bryan Barus, Ken Best, Bob Betyoumaran, Tom Braid, Hubert Elsen, Matt Forsberg, Mike Goin, Lonnie Horn, Matt Kenner, Ray Kvietkus, Mike Leavy, Jack Lindquist, Munesh Makhija,, Diane Milmont, Marc Olson, Don Patterson, Carl Price, Jim Russell, Bert Toppel, Jim Williams and Reza Zarafhsar attended the meeting. Guest Rich Milmont (Diane’s husband and an A&P mechanic among other talents – he’s also a surgical nurse as is Diane) Eddie Gobbell and his Dad. Eddie was inducted into the membership in a hastily reconvened session when he finally arrived from a school activity. (Eddie is a senior at Waubonsie High School.)

The meeting was called to order by President Mark Clement at 7:30 PM. The newsletter was approved as the minutes of the last meeting.

TREASURER'S REPORT
Treasurer Ray Kvietkus provided a summary of the financial status of the Club. The treasurer’s report indicates that the BFC cash balance is $39,614.74. Expenses included a bill for $435.00 for a fuel pump for 415RC, $181.43 for a new gasket for 9TU, and $1,892.05 for fuel at Naper Aero. Jay Mooncotch received a refund of his membership deposit of $3,695.00. A payment of $9,979.15 was made toward the payoff of our loan at Harris Bank. The reserves are fully funded and we have a reserve surplus of $3,548.84. We now have one loan for both 388ES and 415RC, with a remaining balance of about $125,000, financed over 20 years with a guaranteed interest rate of 8.5% for the first 5 years of the loan. Ray informed us that our insurance rates for the coming year have risen 9% effective November 1st. These rates change regularly with market rates and insurer’s experience.

The details of the Treasurer’s Report for September may be found at the end of this newsletter.

N739TU: The GPS unit is out of service and has been removed from the aircraft and shipped to Oregon for repairs. We will also take this opportunity to purchase an new database as this one has not been updated in several years. Airports and VORs tend not to move much but intersections change frequently.

The push to talk switch has now been replaced and there have been no more reports of problems with these radios. Mike Leavy is keeping a special log in the aircraft that he asks that you fill out every time you fly the plane. To be sure these intermittent operation problems are behind us forever, Please jot notes about which radios you used and any impressions you have formed about their use. If there were no difficulties, please note that as well.

Bryan Barus reported that the display flickered when he and Bert were flying. Later, the nut that holds on the push to talk switch came loose in flight. Making sure that nut is firmly seated would be a good idea during your pre-flight inspection.

The nose strut has been repaired once again after a collapse that was announced at the meeting.

N388ES: The baggage door is very hard to close. We have taken the plane over to Luman to have this fixed but it is still a bit stiff.

The reset button for the Marker Beacon has now been repaired.

Ray and I have flown this plane two times trying to understand the autopilot coupling to the GPS during a GPS approach. We have not been able to get this function to work properly. If you have suggestions, please let us know.

415 RC: This plane was going over to Luman for an oil change and taxi light replacement just after the meeting. We had a complaint of no fuel flowing from the left tank. I’ve experienced that same problem myself. The only cure as far as I’m aware is to select the fullest tank during flight for a half an hour at a time. Just be sure to select "Both" tanks as part of your pre-landing checklist.

OLD BUSINESS

The motion that was printed in the last newsletter to purchase new Bendix King radios for 9TU was tabled indefinitely. We are now convinced this problem was related to the push-to-talk switch only and IFR operations can safely be resumed in that aircraft.

NEW BUSINESS

The 2001 slate of officers was put forward and unanimously approved at the October meeting as follows:

President Mark Clements

Vice-President Nick Davis

Treasurer Ray Kvietkus

Secretary Jim Williams

Maintenance Officer &

N415RC Mother Mike Pastore

Member at Large Matt Kenner

Member at Large &

N388ES Mother Hubert Elsen

N739TU Mother Reza Zarafshar

Ex-President Bert Toppel

I’m sure I speak for every member of the club when I heartily thank each of these men for their generous donation of time and toil to our club. This was a particularly active year in the history of the club as we put together a strategic plan, purchased new aircraft and upgraded equipment and tracked our performance to financial models that turned out to be very accurate. Thank you!

The Christmas Party

Christmas is just around the corner. Be sure to reserve Sunday evening, December 3rd on your burgeoning calendars now for the BFC Christmas Party and White Elephant Gift Exchange.

Since Nick was departing to Vienna, Austria on his honeymoon, Bert and Leona graciously accepted the task of making reservations for this year’s gala at Costa’s Greek Mediterranean Dining at 1S130 Summit Avenue in Oakbrook Terrace. Costa’s is located just south of Roosevelt on Summit Avenue (Midwest Road.)

Directions: 1-88 East to Midwest Rd. North. Midwest turns in to Summit and Costa’s is on the west side of the street with plenty of parking.

Now Nick and Terri are back and to celebrate her birthday they went to dinner at Costa’s and loved it! We will have a private room of our own up a few stairs from street level. It comes with our own cash bar, fireplace and bathrooms. We will have room for lots of people in these luxurious accommodations so please be sure to invite everyone!

"The cost will be $32 per person for everything including Tax, Tip, Doc Fee and Delivery." - Nick Davis

Appetizers:

Saganaki (Flaming Cheese)

Fried Calamari (Squid)

House Salad: Small Ceasar

We will have three menu choices.

  1. Classic Athenian Chicken – Marinated Broiled and Basted with Fresh Lemon Juice and Oregano. Potatoes and Green Beans complement the entree.
  2. Athenian Filet Mignon – Thick Center Cut, Grilled with Portabello Mushrooms, Basil Potatoes, Asparagus with Athenian Red Wine Demi-Glaze. Green Beans are included as well
  3. Salmon – Unaffiliated with any particular city, Nick didn’t tell me how this would be cooked. (Just use your imagination.) Potatoes and Green Beans are side dishes included with this entree as well.
Dessert: Tiramisu

Nick asks that you call him as soon as possible (630-393-0539) with your reservation and menu choices. This is not to say that we cannot tolerate any last minute additions to the guest list (bring ‘em on) but the chef, whose name also happens to be Nick, said that he wanted a rough idea before we arrived. (We have guaranteed a minimum of 45 people but this fabulous room could easily accommodate 70.)

2000 BFC Christmas Gala

Oakbrook Terrace

Ph: 630-620-1100

Time: Cocktails 5:00 PM

Oopa!

RSVP to Nick Davis at 630-393-0539 by Nov. 24th with Menu Choices for your party.

All our members, inactive members, former members from Seymour, Indiana, social affliates, Naper Aero residents (come on John Rocci,) friends, extended families and lovers of flight are invited to join us. In fact, Tony Cumbo – just because you went inactive we don’t want you or your Mom missing this party!

As part of this extravaganza, please plan to bring a White Elephant gift for each person. I have no idea where the name comes from, but the gift should be something that would normally be given away or thrown away. This is not something you should buy, but rather something expendable. Wrap it up in a nice package and bring it along. It does not need to be aviation related. But come to think of it, I do have that little toy plane from two years ago that I could recycle. That was the year that Bert and Andrea got eaten by a Wildcat and Leona gave Bert a 747 for Christmas. Andrea should have finished those Dick Francis novels that she received by now. At the party, each person who brings a gift can also pick one out for themselves. Nick has arranged for a special White Elephant table in our private room.

WHAT'S UP WITH WHO'S UP

In an unusual twist, Ray Kvietkus completed his CFII before his CFI due to the vagaries of his school’s Part 141 certification for the instrument portion versus their Part 61 status for primary instructors.

Ray Kvietkus announced at the board meeting last Thursday that he is only about a week away from his CFI check ride. Ray also gave his first student as a CFII, Ken Best, an instrument competency check. Both Ken and Ray are flying well!

Hubert Elsen received his Wings Level 5 award on October 14th passed his CFI check ride on October 27th!

This year’s Water Hose Award goes to Mike Leavy who never missed a worknight, sold our 150 and installed our fabulous new wireless remote control for the 182 winch. Thanks Mike, for your outstanding contributions to the club in 2000!

Just because daylight savings time has ended, planes still need cleaning. The club would be most grateful to any small group that forms to wash, wax and vacuum airplanes. So if the weather looks nice and you want to get a team together to do a little flying and a little work, just let me know so that I can recognize your group for its contribution.

REFRESHMENT LIST

The BFC refreshment list was created as another way of recognizing special achievements. Criteria for membership vary with the length of the list. (The list is so long now that you have to become a CFI tobe included!) The person scheduled for refreshments should bring beverages and desert to the club meeting. If unable to attend, he or she should arrange to trade meeting dates with someone else (preferably poor Bob Betyoumaran) on the list.

SAFETY TOPIC

Please see the enclosed BFC Orientation Checklist. While some of our procedures are just common courtesy and club administration, it is important that each of you have a clear understanding of landing, fueling and run-up conventions for safe operations while you are at Naper Aero.

Larry Bothe was kind enough to send me a safety article that he had published in his newsletter in Seymour regarding runway incursion safety practices. The original source was from the National Association of Flight Instructors magazine E-Mentor.

Larry writes: "In its continuing effort to reduce the number of runway incursion accidents and incidents the FAA has announced that applicants for various pilot certificates and ratings will be tested on their knowledge and understanding of what are termed Airport Movement Practices. The key "best practices" to know are:

  1. The need to read back all runway crossing and/or hold short instructions;
  2. The need to review airport layouts as part of preflight planning and before decending to land , and while taxiing, as needed;
  3. The need to know airport signage;
  4. The need to review Notices to Airmen (NOTAM) for information on runway/taxiway closures and construction areas;
  5. The need not to hesitate to request progressive taxi instructions from ATC when unsure of the taxi route;
  6. The need to check for traffic before crossing any runway or entering a taxiway;
  7. The need to turn on aircraft lights and rotating beacon or strobe lights while taxiing;
  8. The need when landing to clear the active runway as quickly as possible then wait for taxi instructions before further movement;
  9. The need to study and use proper radio phraseology as described in the Aeronautical Information Manual in order to respond to and understand ground control instructions; and
  10. The need to write down complex taxi instructions at unfamiliar airports.
NEXT BUSINESS MEETING

The Businessmen's Flying Club will hold its next business meeting, work night and cookout on Tuesday, November 7, 2000. (It’s Election Day so be sure to stop by the polls on your way to the airport.) The business meeting will start at 7:30 PM at the Naper Aero clubhouse.
