Bert pointed out that the newsletter from before the holidays was never accepted and that it also contained a mistake. We had agreed to recommend that every member should do an annual flight review with an instructor. The newsletter read that this will be a "mandatory requirement."

A motion was made by Bert Toppel to accept the newsletter with the appropriate change to "recommendation." The motion was seconded by Matt Forsberg.

We then accepted the newsletter from the last meeting.

TREASURER'S REPORT
Treasurer Ray Kvietkus provided a summary of the financial status of the Club. The treasurer’s report indicates that the BFC cash balance is $33,100.94. Expenses included a bill for $562.81 for 9TU alternator and 461.38 for 8ES Tires and brakes. The seat cable repair for 5RC cost $562.81. We paid $438.50 to the Naper Aero Club for hanger and tie-down and $932.07 for fuel at Naper Aero. Our Avemco insurance payment was $2,657.00. A payment of $1,354.72.00 was made toward the payoff of our loan at Harris Bank. The reserves are fully funded and we have a reserve surplus of $1,325.54. We now have one loan for both 388ES and 415RC, with a remaining balance of $116,500.00, financed over 20 years with a guaranteed interest rate of 8.5% for the first 5 years of the loan.

Mike Leavy asked if the membership deposit by members was fully funded and secured. Ray assured us that it is. Additionally, Mike asked the amount of a minimum payment on our aircraft loan. Ray answered that the minimum payment was $1,300.

The details of the Treasurer’s Report for February may be found at the end of this newsletter.

N739TU: Hubert Elsen reported on the electrical problems encountered on Saturday, February 3rd. On a flight with Marc Olson, the circuit breaker for the GPs unit popped. On a subsequent flight (actually on the taxiway) with potential new member Angie McHale, Hubert noticed a spark from underneath the panel on the left side. The flight was aborted. Mike Pastore ferried the plane to J&A who discovered a bare wire from the GPS unit to be the culprit. Apparently the electrical problems weren't enough to deter Angie from wanting to join the club.

9TU was very close to an oil change (within 2 hours) at the time of the meeting. The plane was taken in to Lumanair for the annual inspection during the last week of February.

N388ES: 8ES needed to go over to Luman at the time of the meeting. Reza had to wait out some bad weather but eventually got it delivered. The taxi light was out, back lighting for the EGT was out, the front strut was low, and an oil change was due.

415 RC: There were no squawks but an oil change was imminent.

OLD BUSINESS

Al Pakalniskis asked about instruction books for the GPS units. Ray told the membership that they are available to anyone at the special discounted price of $20.00 plus tax. There was also some discussion of a simulator being available either directly on Bendix King’s website or via AOPA's website. (Hubert mentioned that he has the simulator- it only allows you to play with the basic functions and menus. No approaches can be practiced directly but it's still a good tool!)

Bylaws Discussion:

Matt Kenner suggested that we make the changes available to everyone to read and comment upon. If there are corrections, we can share concerns at a meeting after the review. Ken Best said that there were entire paragraphs missing or changed from the old format, and we may want to do a proper review. Reza suggested that Ken Best should get together with Nick Davis and Mike Pastore to go over the by-laws and finalize the language. Then, a final version can be distributed at a general meeting. This seemed like a good idea to everyone and Ken will contact Mike and Nick.

Mike Leavy mentioned that a technical detail about the winch in the handbook needed to be updated.

Ray mentioned that he had not received the official paperwork from Avemco on the Life Line service our Best pilot had proposed. According to Ken there won't be any additional cost to the club.

NEW BUSINESS

Matt Kenner obtained an updated handbook for 415RC. The only change he noticed is the starting procedure: the fuel pump is used for priming only, and shut off prior to starting.

Several people complained that the north hangar doors (415RC) needed repairs desperately. Matt Kenner promised to discuss this with Mark Clements. Andrea Hoyt complained about the lack of recoil on the ground wire at the fuel pumps.

Reza wanted some clarification on the new fuel strainers we originally purchased for the new airplanes. It appears that they break very easily and they are rather expensive to replace. We actually had agreed at a previous meeting not to replace these containers. Instead we will revert back to using the "old fashioned" cups and pour the gas into the new containers so we can recycle the gas back into the plane.

Matt made a suggestion on behalf of Nick Davis for a provision we have in our regulations prohibiting over-water flights. Nick apparently had checked with our insurance and they didn't see a problem, except for flights to Cuba (Darn, here goes another long cross country. Sorry, Fidel). After some discussion of this and other safety-related issues, a motion was made to strike the clause.

Mike Goin suggested that we should include some safety recommendations (perhaps under Operating Guidelines) with our by-laws. This was seen as an added benefit to pilots with less experience or students pilots.

Bert had some comments on the refreshment list. He felt that originally this list was created to recognize aeronautical achievements - not some frivolous occasion. Of course Bert is on the list for his 50th wedding anniversary. A comment was made that 50 years of marital bliss certainly can't be considered a frivolous occasion... (I wonder if Leona reads this newsletter. I guess not. Bert is an electronic subscriber.)

WHAT'S UP WITH WHO'S UP

Ray Kvietkus finished his CFI last month and was planning to take an Airplane Instructor Written Exam on the Saturday following the meeting.

REFRESHMENT LIST

The BFC refreshment list was created as another way of recognizing special achievements. Criteria for membership vary with the length of the list. (If this list gets too short, we may have to think up some special reason to put Bert on.) The person scheduled for refreshments should bring beverages and desert to the club meeting. If unable to attend, he or she should arrange to trade meeting dates with someone else on the list.

Mike Pastore March 2001
Bert Toppel April 2001

MEMBERSHIP

There were no membership changes during the month, however, we had an unprecedented number of visitors interested in BFC membership.

Angie McHale visited the meeting with her check ride endorsement from Hubert in hand, along with a third class medical. The mother of two small girls, Megan and Caitlyn, Angie joins the waiting list along with her husband Patrick. Angie starts ground school in March while she is on the waiting list. Angie and Pat moved here from Cincinnati, Ohio last summer and Pat works with me at National Semiconductor.

Rich Patelski was visiting from Downers Grove. Rich has a fairly new Private Pilot certificate he received in July. He turned in his completed application after a check ride with Ray Kvietkus.

Larry Vaughn lives across the street from the airport in White Eagle and is a golfing buddy of Carl Price. He got a medical and took a check ride with Ray later in the month after attending the meeting and joins our waiting list. At least we know that Carl can take you up for rides while you’re waiting, Larry.

Jim Bryant of Western Springs was invited to the BFC meeting by his friend and our beloved former Treasurer, Tom Braid. Jim is planning to start ground school as soon as he can get a medical.

Bryan Totten started flying in 1994 and has an instrument rating. He recently relocated to downtown Chicago with his wife Alyson. Alyson must be a really good sport because she even flew with Bryan and Ray on the check ride!

Patricia Wager works at UIC in the Office of Gift Development. Pat really likes flying commercially and has started taking lessons in the NFC. Her instructor just bought his own plane so she is looking at other options for aircraft and instructor availability. Fortunately for Pat, the BFC is in the best shape we’ve ever been for eager instructors anxious to help! Pat also is going to be looking at DuPage airport and the NFC.

SAFETY TOPIC

After Hubert’s experience with an electrical short in 9TU. We urged all members to review electrical malfunction procedures in the aircraft they fly.

NEXT BUSINESS MEETING

The Businessmen's Flying Club will hold its next business meeting on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at the Naper Aero clubhouse beginning at 7:30 PM.
